Investors That Inspire Us,

Happy SpaceX IPO Day To The Greatest Living American’s!

When it comes to investing, we look for companies that are lead by visionary founders, and notable investors, Chamath Palihapitiya is both and a lot more. A self-made venture capitalist, entrepreneur, and outspoken advocate for patient, disciplined investing,Chamath reminds us that true wealth building is a marathon—not a sprint. His journey and insights on compounding and patience offer powerful lessons for anyone serious about long-term financial independence.

Chamath’s Journey: From Humble Beginnings to Silicon Valley Force. Born in 1976 in Sri Lanka, Chamath moved to Canada at age five with his family. He earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo and began his career in tech, holding roles at AOL, Winamp, and Mayfield Fund before joining Facebook in 2007. At Facebook, he rose to become a senior executive, leading the Growth, Platform, and Mobile teams—playing a key role in scaling the company into a global powerhouse. In 2011, he founded Social Capital, a venture firm focused on technology, healthcare, and solving big societal problems. Through Social Capital, Chamath has backed transformative companies and popularized SPACs (Special Purpose Acquisition Companies), bringing public market access to innovative firms like Virgin Galactic. He also co-owns a stake in the Golden State Warriors (which he helped acquire) and co-hosts the popular All-In podcast. His achievements reflect bold risk-taking paired with a deep understanding of capital allocation—qualities that have made him a polarizing yet influential figure in finance and tech.

Chamath’s Core Beliefs: Compounding, Patience, and Playing the Infinite Game. Chamath repeatedly emphasizes that investing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s a “get-rich-slow” game—a game that demands patience and discipline. Here are key principles drawn from his wisdom:

  • Build Your Own Compound Interest Table: Early in his investing journey, Chamath manually created spreadsheets to visualize compounding. He shared a story of an athlete with a massive contract whose mind was blown by the power of even small, consistent growth over decades. The lesson? Even modest beginnings can lead to enormous outcomes with time and consistency. As he notes, focus on a systematic process, and “these things can grow over 20 and 30 years.”

  • Embrace Patience Like Buffett: Chamath cites Warren Buffett as a model of incredible patience, letting compounding do the heavy lifting. While he admits to being “a little bit too active at times,” he stresses the importance of resisting short-term temptations for long-term alpha.

  • Start Small, Stay Quiet, and Let Results Speak: Don’t worry about what others think of your initial capital. “Just start and just not tell anybody and then show up 10 or 15 years later with a huge war chest.” The only people who care how much you start with are those trying to feel better about their own choices.

  • Take Calculated Risks and Own Everything: Investing involves risk. Understand where you are on the risk curve, take 100% responsibility, and avoid positions you can’t justify. Learn from mistakes—Chamath has openly discussed tough periods, including significant drawdowns, but stresses using U.S. tax rules like carry-forward losses to recover and improve.

  • Invest in What You Love: For beginners, look around at products you genuinely use and admire (like his son who invested in gaming companies). Buy shares in companies that make things you believe in.This grounds decisions in real-world insight rather than hype.

  • Portfolio Construction as a Barbell: Chamath structures his own portfolio with concentrated, high-upside bets on technology on one end, hedged with safer assets (like his Warriors investment) on the other. This approach matches risk tolerance to life stage—more aggression when young, more protection later—while always knowing yourself. (Coach Kyle’s take: We use STRC in the Apex 10 portfolio also GOOG and AMZN as examples of the strategy)

Final Thoughts from Chamath

“People think investing is a get-rich-quick business and it’s not… It’s a game that requires unbelievable amounts of patience. Every time that people want get-rich-quick schemes, they stop thinking for themselves… Don’t do that to yourself. You are responsible. At G.L.A INVEST RESEARCH, we believe these principles—discipline, compounding, and personal responsibility—are timeless. (COACH KYLE’s Take:—It’s our responsibility to know what we own, and to out research our competition. With that said, we have an unquenchable thirst for research and to help our network beat the market without the use of wall st.. Until next time……
